SrutiBox App Reviews

Excellent if you know what it is.

This is a great app for anyone serious about overtones and intonation.

Fantastic!

I love this simple to use drone device! Great sound! Highly recommended.

Cool sound, easy to use.

As a wanna-be enlightened zen master I am drawn to anything that brings me closer to oneness. With this app I can create a sound which helps induce in me a calmness rarely experienced. A teacher once told me to take 5 minutes at the beginning of each hour to do nothing. With my custom background drone I am that much more in control of my mental state, which is simultaneously chilled and activated. Im glad I got this.

Great Idea - Great Buy

Im happy someone thought of this. The sound is not very authentic, but the idea is right on. I usually use a raagini (electric tanpura) to provide a drone. This definitely doesnt have the same sound quality, but the developer is already thinking about this based on the update plans. This is also about 1/100 of the price, so that said - its amazing. Get it if you want to drone out blissfuly (albeit digitally).

Awesome..Thanks!

Tune in..turn on...bliss out...! Love it!

Well designed, useful, friendly.

What a nice surprise. This is a well designed, useful and friendly little app. Great for practicing, composing, daydreaming. If youve ever used a real sruti box youll be pleased to find here a variety of reed timbers and tunings plus the random detune feature. Fantastic job, Mr. Lowengard. What else can you drum up?

Zen out

As I am interested in using this for meditation purposes I would like to see a save option for different settings. Choose my custom settings such as calming, focusing, etc. Love playing with the different sounds and frequencies. Wonderful app considering I knew nothing about a sruti box.

WOW...

perfect for creating ambient music...

2.99 for generic sine waves!?

$2.99 for a generic sine wave oscilator...rip off. Create your own tones in Logic, Reason, or Ableton...save your money; I wish I did.

Pretty cool

Didnt really know what is was, but once I figured it out it was pretty cool. I enjoy music but its not like a piano or guitar. It makes differnt noises which comes across relaxing.

Very cool app

I love the sound it makes and Im definately going to use it live at an improv gig next weekend. Only reason I didnt give it 5 stars is because its next to impossible to control 2 sliders at once because theyre so small. I should note that i have big fingers; someone with smaller ones might not have that problem. So I have a feature request: please add a button to hide the top controls and expand the width of the sliders to fill the extra space.

Great, relaxing sounds

Really fun app, very soothing sounds.. Can be stretched and detuned to make some less soothing more forboding sounds as well.. Really great little noise machine. Its great to play along to the drone on another instrument. It is a very mesmerizing and relaxing sound generator and Im very happy I have it. Thanks!

Not even close

I have a harmonium, and have use a shruti box many times. for those of you thinking youre going to get the deep responant, reedy tones of a shruti with this app.... SORRY! Like on of the other reviewers has said, and I didnt listen. Its a tone generator.

Very cool

This is not, as one reviewer said, a "simple sine wave oscillator", it allows additive synthesis of 12 oscillators. While it may not match the authentic sound of a harmonium, it is in fact very cool. I agree that the sliders are a bit hard to control (it got easier when I found I could tap on the location I want it to go to, rather than trying to drag the button). My other complaint is that the help text is way too small to read; the zoom gesture did make the text larger, but then it was too hard to scroll. Im only going to 4 stars because it is totally lacking in modulation options.

awesome

Thank you for this app! Please continue to support it. I love using it at gigs as a backup drone, and Id love to see added functionality. Maybe a stereo reverb setting to amp up the room wetness?

Great app, but I need some help testing something

Is the new version causing anyone elses iPhone to overheat and stay overheated until the app is uninstalled? I had this installed for a couple days before I tried it. After trying it, I didnt notice anything odd, but a few hours later my iPhone felt really warm. I thought it was a body heat thing, since the phone was kept in an inside coat pocket. But the temp never dropped, even when I kept the device off-charger and near a fan. At some point I recalled that v1.0 of Sruti mentioned slight heating while Scrutibox was played...I guessed that maybe some function in version 1.1 wasnt releasing all of its resources, and this was causing some sort of runaway heating...to test this, I uninstalled Srutibox. I noticed almost instantly that my iPhones temp was normal. Has anyone else experienced this? This is not a knock on the app at all...I really enjoy it and wish I could find a way to port the sound to my Boss BR-600...but I cant play it if its going to overheat my phone.

I Dig It

Its fun to have something like this if only to manipulate interval and chord tones against each other on your ipod at your convenience. I think the haters that are whining about the 3 bucks and I should have used logic and all of that are missing the point completely. The sounds are soothing and pleasant enough even if they are not totally authentic, and kind of remind me of some of the non-westernized pedal tone drones used on some of the recordings I have from people such as Ustad Bismillah Khan.

Very Cool

If you know music theory, you can have a ball with this. I was originally looking for something that could emulate a Tanbura. This gets close, with the right scale, but it could use a preset voice for the Tanbura, and something to distort the waveform to get it to sound like a Tanbura drone. I realize that it wasnt intended for that, it is a SrutiBox simulator, but it seems like it wouldnt take much to add the Tanbura, and it would make it much more useful (at least for me). Still, think it is a great app.

Amazing App.

Thank you so much for Sruti Box. In addition to being able to adjust notes from the harmonic series, it also gives you the ability to play notes in a variety of tunings, as well as create your own! An amazing instrument and learning tool for musicians of any level! -michael Uhler

Thank You

I am ecstatic that you thought of this and brought it out for us to use. Thank you. I like to play Carnatic music, and now I do not need to carry a Tamboura, or even a srutibox. I predict the convenience will engender more music. My suggestion is to go beyond a srutibox and add the sounds of a Tamboura as well: i.e. to be able to sound notes individually in time as strings. Then we could even use this in concert situations!
